Demonstration of ground state cooling using microwaves

We have demonstrated ground state cooling of 9Be+ ions using microwave fields produced by a custom microwave "antenna" embedded into a surface-electrode ion trap. The viewgraph shows the suppression of the red (cooling) sideband which occurs close to the motional ground state, while the blue sideband exhibits a substantial contrast. Our next step will be to work towards an entangling two-qubit gate. We look forward to more exciting results using the embedded microwave antenna!
